Instigated in 1978 the Mountain & Moorland Ridden Championships is now sponsored by BSPS, under the new title of BSPS HERITAGE Ridden Mountain & Moorland Supreme Championships.
As its new title suggests the 12 breeds of British native ponies are our heritage and we must continue to ensure their survival by promoting the breeds and ensure the highest standards of each breed is retained.
The competition takes place at London Olympia Horse Show on the Monday of the Show 19th December. The new competition’s objectives are not only to maintain and ensure that the best of breeds go to Olympia, but to also encourage a wider participation in the competition. The number of ponies qualifying for Olympia will increase to 40, of which all individual breeds will be represented.
Ten major horse shows around the country hold a direct qualifying round consisting of six classes, Small breeds (Dartmoor, Exmoor and Shetland), Welsh A & B, Welsh C, Welsh D, Large Breeds (Dales Fell and Highland), Connemara and New Forest, where the champion pony will automatically qualify for this Championship. If the Champion has already qualified, the Reserve Champion will qualify, or the first Reserve Champion, where the Reserve Champion has qualified
To widen the field of participation, 21 additional shows will also run a first round qualifier where the first two ponies in each class go forward to a semi final at the BSPS Heritage Championships, From the Semi final, the first three ponies from each of the six classes will go forward to Olympia. To ensure that every Breed is represented there are12 individual breed qualifiers held at the BSPS Heritage Championships. The first placed pony from each class to qualify.
Two pairs of Judges will judge the final each awarding marks for each phase, performance and conformation and prize money is generously given by The Hawkins Family and TAAS Ltd. The champion will receive The Pauline Barfield Memorial Trophy.
